Deep brain stimulation - help for Parkinson’s patients

As one of over 30 centres in Germany, together with the Specialist Centre for Neurosurgery and Epilepsy Surgery, we offer you Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS) for the treatment of Parkinson’s disease. Similarly to a cardiac pacemaker, a small computer, which is known as a stimulator or “brain pacemaker” is implanted under the skin of the stomach or chest. Also under the skin, electrodes go out of this stimulator along thin wires to the brain and, through a neurosurgically inserted borehole, through the scullcap into the brain, to the place - down to the millimetre - that is responsible for the movement disorder. Then the individually programmed stimulator triggers tiny electric pulses. In this way, we help you to reduce the main complaints of physical inactivity, tremors and increased muscle tone. It is to be expected that there will be a reduction in the amount of medication you require.
