Less weight - better health: We offer support

Obesity is a complex, chronic and lifelong disease that is not cured by a one-time treatment. Physical sequelae in particular are dangerous: High blood pressure, joint wear, sleep-related respiratory disorders, childlessness or cancer worsen the quality of life and even shorten the life expectancy. Obesity and type 2 diabetes are associated with each other particularly often. In addition to this are the emotional effects: Some of those affected develop an eating disorder that is associated with depression, social anxiety, ADHD or other mental disorders.

Our specialists at Schoen Clinic have many years of experience in the treatment of obesity – whether by surgery in the event of severe obesity or by psychosomatic treatment in the event of an eating disorder. We accompany you on your way to becoming healthier with individual treatment.

Causes & symptoms

Obesity – At what weight should you become a specialist?

The majority of adults in Germany are overweight. If there are any risk factors for further illnesses, you should discuss this with your doctor.
Physicians refer to a Body Mass Index (BMI) of 30 as obesity. It is not a temporary problem, but rather a chronic disease.
If your BMI is over 30, you should think about long-term treatment. There are various, serious outpatient programs for long-term weight loss, which are sometimes supported by the health insurance companies.
Surgery is considered from a BMI 40 or BMI 35 with serious sequelae, such as diabetes. Surgery is the only treatment that has been proven to be successful for severe obesity. Our surgical specialists are happy to advise you personally.

If obesity is due to an eating disorder or mental illness, our specialists will clarify whether a psychosomatic treatment should be the focus.

Causes: How does obesity come about?

Obesity does not have a single cause. It is the result of various factors:
Our current living conditions (for example, over-abundance of high-calorie food and limited exercise) promote obesity. Genetic predisposition determines our metabolism’s activity. Some hormonal diseases, such as of the thyroid, can also lead to obesity.
Unfortunately, many psychotropic drugs and antihypertensive drugs also influence the increase in body weight. A particular problem arises when overweight diabetics need medication to lower blood glucose, because this leads to additional weight gain and thus to the progressive deterioration of diabetes. This creates a vicious cycle.
Likewise, mental illnesses such as eating disorders (such as binge eating disorder), depression and social anxiety can affect eating habits.
In terms of treatment, it is important to recognise the different causes.

Symptoms or consequences of obesity

Social pressure, one's own appearance and limited mobility often affect sufferers most.
Obesity is mainly due to various physical sequelae diseases. This includes:
  • Cardiovascular diseases, such as hypertension and arteriosclerosis
  • Chronic back pain and joint wear (especially the knee and hip joints)
  • Sleep-related breathing disorders (sleep apnoea)
  • Diabetes mellitus type 2
  • Fatty liver
  • Gout
  • Increased risk of various cancers
  • Decreased fertility
  • Depressions
These secondary diseases can usually be significantly improved or even cured by sustained weight loss.

Every overweight person sees his or her weight problem. A successful treatment, however, requires investigating whether the excess weight is only affecting self-esteem or is already causing subsequent physical illnesses.

That is why we not only determine your height, weight and BMI in our obesity centres. Our specialists also extensively test your blood levels, such as blood sugar, blood lipids, uric acid, liver enzymes, thyroid function and cortisol. We ask you about how you feed, how your weight has evolved over time, and what medications you are taking. We also look at your social environment. The synopsis of all these tests and examinations allows us to make an accurate diagnosis and determine the best possible treatment for your suffering.
