How we treat an aortic aneurysm - Avoid emergency situations
Thanks to gentle surgical techniques and X-ray diagnostics in the operating room, interventions on the aorta these days are routine surgeries. Last year alone, our specialists carried out over 1500 heart and vascular surgeries. Our consultants are among the most experienced and competent surgeons in this field. They treat both the underlying illness as well as the possible consequences of an aneurysm. The top priority of aortic aneurysm treatment is preventative treatment while considering the individual risk in order to achieve the best possible results.
If you are aware of a threatening enlargement of the aorta, our cardiac and vascular surgeons can replace it in due time with an aortic prosthesis that is suitable for you. We are there for you too if there should be an acute breakdown or rupture of the aorta. 24 hours a day. 365 days a year.
Surgical treatment methods
Aortic aneurysm: Treatment by our vascular surgeons
Our speciality is the gentle use of stent prostheses to eliminate an aneurysm, both in the ribcage as well as in the abdomen. Even if the aneurysm spans over the pelvic arteries, a stent implant can be implanted without compromising blood flow to the pelvic internal organs.
The stent implant is inserted over a small incision above the iliac artery. This minimally invasive procedure is much less stressful for you than traditional open surgery.
With precise three-dimensional planning of the implant on the computer, we can tailor it to you exactly. The X-ray system in the operating theatre then precisely controls every step of the implantation.
If we cannot implant a stent implant for you, we can also rely on traditional surgical procedures:
- Replacement of the aneurysm with tube prosthesis implantation
- Replacement of the aneurysm with Y-prosthesis implantation
- Combinations with bypass implantations
Aortic aneurysm: Treatment by our heart surgeonsIf an aneurysm is diagnosed near the heart, our cardiac surgery experts will be called in. In this case, no stent implants can be used. The diseased part of the aorta is therefore replaced by a tailor-made vascular implant in an open surgery.
After the operation
You can already eat and drink normally and stand up gradually the day after the stent implant. After about four to six days, you are back at home already. It is not necessary to stay in a rehabilitation clinic to get fit for everyday life again, but is usually associated with an open aneurysm surgery and we organise it.
We are happy to offer you additional support: We have developed a special follow-up program where we periodically check the affected vessel(s). For your safety.
