Heart valve changes

Gently getting moving again

Do you go for a walk and suffer from shortness of breath after just this light exercise? Constricted or leaking heart valves can be the reason why our heart can no longer pump properly. Such heart valve changes can be corrected with surgery.

At Schoen Clinic, we specialise in heart valve reconstructions. Our experienced specialists have minimally invasive procedures to strengthen your heart in the best possible way.

Causes & symptoms

Causes: How heart valve changes occur

There are many causes of heart valve disease. Degeneration (wear and tear), connective tissue diseases and inflammation most frequently lead to severe changes in the heart valves. Of the four heart valves, the aortic, mitral and tricuspid valves are primarily affected.
In some cases, the heart valve changes are also congenital or develop due to heart failure.

Symptoms: common symptoms of heart valve changes

The symptoms of heart valve disease are also numerous. Depending on whether the left or right half of the heart is affected, the following symptoms may occur:
  • Shortness of breath
  • Frequent urination (especially at night)
  • Water in the legs (oedema)
  • Deterioration in liver and kidney function
