Non-surgical therapies for thyroid gland enlargementIn certain cases, individual nodes can be destroyed with heat. This scar-free method is under development and is only suitable in special cases.
How to prevent goitreThe best prevention is an adequate intake of iodine-containing foods. In order to cover your iodine requirements, you should eat iodine-containing foods at least once, but ideally twice, a week. Plenty of iodine is contained in marine fish such as cod and salmon, or seafood such as mussels, lobsters and shrimp. Iodised salt or iodine-enriched foods, such as bread and sausages, are also suitable.
The World Health Organisation (WHO) recommendations:
- Teenagers and adults: 200 micrograms of iodine per day
- Pregnant and breastfeeding women: 260 micrograms per day
- Children under six years: 100 to 120 micrograms per day
- Schoolchildren: 140 to 200 micrograms per day
