Prof. Dr. Götz von Wichert
Internal Medicine and Gastroenterology
The specialists at the hospital for Internal Medicine and Gastroenterology in Hamburg offer a comprehensive range of diagnostic and therapeutic methods from the entire area of internal medicine and gastrointestinal problems (gastroenterology). Health problems often affect several organs which are frequently linked. That is why our experts focus on you as a whole person. Close co-operation with the doctor treating you is of great importance so that a seamless transition into outpatient care can be ensured. At the end of your inpatient stay, you will therefore be personally handed the doctor’s letter for your GP. In acute cases, a specialised, interdisciplinary team will look after you in the Emergency Department that is open around the clock.
Thanks to state-of-the-art, extensive technical equipment, our consultants can precisely diagnose conditions from the oesophagus to the rectum and work out the most suitable treatment for you. The hospital is equipped with a next generation endoscopic ultrasound unit, for example. Of course, the highest hygiene standards are complied with when disinfecting the endoscopes and accessories. In functional diagnostics, high-resolution pressure measurements in the oesophagus, long-term pH measurements and specific breathing tests in the differential diagnosis of digestive disorders are used, among other things. In the Ultrasound Department, all sonographic and Doppler sonographic examinations are carried out. Focus here is on tissue diagnostics using ultrasound-controlled cannulation as well as using ultrasound signal intensifiers.
In co-operation with your GP or resident specialist, we will let you know about upcoming diagnostic and therapeutic steps in a comprehensive pre-admission discussion in our hospital. With your input, we will agree what happens next. For maximum treatment success, we rely on interdisciplinary co-operation with general and abdominal surgery and radiology as well as resident oncologists and radiation therapists. In an interdisciplinary conference, our team of experts then decides your individual treatment concept.
In gastroenterology, the following conditions are diagnosed and treated:
Endoscopic examination of the bile ducts and pancreas (ERCP)
Insertion of a feeding tube via the abdominal wall (PEG or PEJ)
Contrast medium ultrasound
Treatment of liver and bile duct conditions (hepatology) is a specialist field within gastroenterology. The experts in our hospital in Hamburg diagnose and treat the entire spectrum of conditions relating to these organs - with gentle laparoscopic and modern endoscopic methods. In addition to the liver and bile ducts, the team of experts specialises in diagnosing and treating pancreas conditions such as inflammation and tumours. Rare illnesses are also treated in our hospital in Hamburg.
Secondary diseases of alcoholism, e.g. liver cirrhosis
Bile duct inflammation
Acute and chronic pancreas inflammation
Rare illnesses and tumours
A cancer diagnosis is a shock for the patient and relatives. Our specialists are committed to treating you individually, holistically and in an interdisciplinary way. That is why other disciplines such as surgery, psychology, pain therapy and other treatment partners are naturally included in your treatment. The experts discuss each individual case as part of an interdisciplinary tumour conference. During this meeting, a harmonised treatment concept is developed that is perfect for you. A particular concern is the treatment of cancer patients who need help in an advanced stage of their illness. Under inpatient conditions, so-called palliative treatment focuses on achieving symptom control as well as ensuring the patient is as free from pain as possible.
As a modern alternative to conventional dialysis, the hospital in Hamburg uses so-called peritoneal dialysis. During this procedure, a catheter is surgically inserted into the peritoneum. The advantage for you: You do not need to go to a practice or hospital for your dialysis but can do it at home. You can work or do other activities because you remain mobile during the dialysis. Furthermore, fewer side effects can be expected with this modern dialysis procedure because it is comparable with the natural function of the kidney, ensuring the body is evenly and continuously “detoxed” and drained. During intensive training, you will be prepared for the required high level of personal responsibility this dialysis procedure entails. Of course, our hospital’s experts are here for you at any time. Peritoneal dialysis is not only suitable for patients suffering from kidney insufficiency but also for those affected by heart insufficiency which is mostly incurable. Referral takes place via specialised outpatient co-operation partners.
