DBT – Dialectical Behavioural Therapy

DBT special station for double diagnoses

Some patients with borderline personality disorder also suffer from addiction or substance abuse. We treat borderline personality disorder patients with an addictive disorder who would not receive adequate psychotherapy at a conventional withdrawal clinic. On our special ward, we treat patients from all over Germany in a twelve-week therapy programme.

Our special DBT programme for addicts with borderline personality disorder

In our treatment concept, we combine modern approaches of dialectical behavioural therapy (DBT) and addiction treatment (= DBT addiction). DBT is a behavioural therapy approach developed by the American Marsha M. Linehan to treat people with borderline personality disorder. “Dialectical” in the sense of DBT means, in simplified terms, softening the hard limits of “black and white thinking” that many people with borderline personality disorder have and bringing the “grey tones” into play.

Essential contents of the dialectical behavioural therapy are:

  • Increasing mindfulness for internal and external processes

  • Dealing with feelings and high states of tension

  • Learning interpersonal skills

  • Increasing self-esteem

Our DBT-S treatment in detail

The contents are developed by our specially trained therapists together with the affected persons in structured patient-centred care discussions and group therapies. In individual psychotherapeutic discussions, the therapy goals are worked on the basis of the DBT hierarchy. Dialectic Behavioural Therapy takes place in an open ward framework, which means that you as a patient can move freely here. If a borderline personality disorder patient cannot start the DBT programme abstinently, we will start withdrawal treatment on our ward on an individual basis and after prior consultation.

Four addiction-specific self-help groups and one borderline self-help group meet regularly in our hospital and offer their support.
