We’ll help you overcome depression

Different approaches provide effective help for depression. They can also be used as additional aids. All methods aim to improve your mood and other symptoms, and should allow you to regain a better quality of life in the long term.

In many cases, depression can be treated on an outpatient basis. If this isn’t sufficient or successful, inpatient treatment may be required. In this case, just being distanced from your responsibilities and conflicts at home and your excessive demands can often provide relief. Alternatively, however, semi-stationary treatment at a day clinic can also be beneficial. The closeness to everyday life is one big advantage of day clinics – you can try out what you’ve learnt at home directly. If issues are still present, you can talk to us about these in therapy and work out ways to solve them.

Psychotherapy after cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT)

Through psychotherapy, we work together with you to develop starting points for positive changes in your life.

Therapy elements include:
  • creating positive and enjoyable activities and experiences
  • changing distorted, predominantly negative or pessimistic thought patterns
  • practising social skills for better relationships with other people
  • (re)building social contacts
  • creating strategies for solving problems
  • sport therapy and physiotherapeutic measures
  • mindfulness training.

At Schoen Clinic, there are numerous psychotherapeutic group sessions available – your therapist will select the groups suitable for you as part of your personal therapy plan.

Coping with depression group
Here you will learn how depression affects you as a person as well as your interpersonal relationships. Patients talk amongst themselves, guided by a therapist. This lets you learn how to better understand depressive thoughts and behaviours. You’ll be acutely aware of your own behaviour, discuss your personal goals with other participants and recognise opportunities for change. This leads to more positive activities, constructive thinking and an improved mood, including in interpersonal connections. In the long term, you’ll then find a balance between activity and self-care that gives you more stability.

Occupational group therapy
Different work groups are at high risk of suffering from burnout, which can develop into manifest depression. We therefore offer special therapy concepts for teachers, police officers, consultants and therapists at Schoen Clinic. In these groups, you’ll learn strategies for staying healthy in the long term, even after returning to work.

Depression: treatment through medication

For moderate and severe depression, supportive medicinal treatment with antidepressants is often helpful. This aims to stabilise your cerebral metabolism and help towards improving your symptoms. Additional methods such as sleep restriction therapy are also used on a case-by-case basis. In fact, after a sleepless night, many patients have an improved mood already.

Treatment for chronic depression

If you’ve suffered from depression for more than two years and haven’t noticed any improvement, you suffer from chronic depression. You’ll then require a special therapy concept: the cognitive behavioural analysis system of psychotherapy (CBASP) is a tried-and-tested concept especially for chronic depression which helps you to better cope with your illness.

Treatment for depression in old age

Essentially, psychotherapeutic treatment for older people doesn’t differ that much from treatment for younger people. In terms of practical tasks, however, we’ve made some adjustments to the contents to allow older patients to participate successfully as well.

The therapy concept “60%2B” has been developed for our older patients who frequently experience life upheavals. This focuses on topics such as loss or the fear of loss, dealing with age-related limitations, appreciating life so far and starting retirement.

But in contrast to younger patients, you’ll have another benefit: a wealth of life experience. Our therapists refer to this and make you aware of the challenges you’ve already overcome. These strengths tie in to the strategies for solving your current crisis.

Gerontopsychosomatic treatment approach
Because physical and psychological disorders often occur in old age as well, it’s important to carry out treatment where the specialist departments of psychosomatic and geriatrics in particular work closely together. So, alongside psychotherapeutic elements, you’ll also receive intensive medical treatment for organs. Our specialist gerontopsychosomatics department is specifically for people over 65 years of age. Here, we support you in coping with life topics such as fears of becoming disabled, dependency, receiving long-term care, loneliness and the elimination of your daily structure.

Medicinal treatment
Medicinal treatment with antidepressants is often helpful, especially for moderate or severe depression. This aims to stabilise your cerebral metabolism and help towards improving your symptoms. Our consultants pay close attention to how well this is tolerated with other essential medications.
